Shaykh Yusuf Al Qardhawy passed away at the age of 96 today, September 26, 2022.
He was trained in Al Azhar in his academic journey, where he was awarded his B.A in Arabic language, his M.A in the studies of Quran and Sunnah, and obtained his PhD with first class distinction.
His great concern on the hardships of the Ummah is reflected in his PhD dissertation on Zakat and its role on social problems.
He left us with more than 170 books and journals, some of it are benefited by many students of knowledge and as reference points by various fatwa institutions around the globe.
Amongst his renowned works are:
• The Halal & Haram in Islam
• The Contemporary Fatwas
• The Value Of Time In A Muslim Life
• The Problem Of Poverty And Its Solution In Islam
and a number of books on Fiqh for many contemporary issues.
Although Shaykh is seen by some as a controversial figure for his stance in politics, his insights for the Muslim world are profound.
When we had the rise of the modern economy, shaykh make a note of it in his book ‘Bank Interests Are The Prohibited Interests’.
When the modern world is stimulated by the Fast Entertainment that is at every edge of our corner, he penned in his book ‘The Fiqh Guide To Entertainment & Leisure’.
Whenever I went through the biographies of the great scholars that lived before us, it is close to impossible to imagine that they can come out with a large number of writings with the same amount of time that we are given. Such miracles are proven possible by these scholars like Shaykh in our time today.
The causal theory could not bring a satisfactory explanation to how these men brought such an immense work for the Ummah except that it proves Allah’s blessings are upon them and us, insyaAllah.
We ask Allah that He forgive and have mercy on shaykh, elevate him in the ranks of the Pious, and accept from him of his dedications and sacrifices for the Ummah.
